MyPlate Photography & Photo Gallery
Designer | Urban Emu
During my time supporting USDA’s MyPlate I was responsible for lending creative direction to the MyPlate cultural foods photoshoot. From this shoot we were able to curate over 100 custom shots of food dishes representing multiple cultures in the United States. Following final selections of these shots we created the MyPlate Photo Gallery where users can download the images for use in promotional, informational and educational efforts.
The Photoshoot
Partnering with a local food photography studio in DC we were able to shoot dozens of dishes that different cultures make in America. This photoshoot was my favorite project I completed while at Urban Emu. Getting to work with our client, food stylists, photographers, and cultural experts was an amazing experience that I learned a lot from.
In my role as designer I contributed my creative direction while on site at the photoshoot. I was able to arrange dishes and make sure that the guidelines from our client were honored all while working with the members of the teams I mentioned above.

The work didn’t stop with the photoshoot! Once final selections of these shots were selected I helped create the MyPlate Photo Gallery where users can download the images for use in promotional, informational and educational efforts. The gallery can be filtered by cuisine and course. Some dishes have multiple shot angles which can be downloaded (see the center wireframe below). MyPlate also has a tool called MyPlate kitchen. Some recipes we photographed can be found on MyPlate kitchen as indicated by the “View Recipe” link on the third wireframe below.
