MyPlate Plan – USDA
Designer | Urban Emu
The MyPlate Plan calculator uses different formulas based on the user's age, and additional adjustment factors to show users what and how much to eat from the food groups over the course of a day. The MyPlate Plans are available in multiple languages and have been culturally adapted to reflect the foods of those cultures.
For this widget I was able to improve the user experience by updating the components, flow, and doing a complete overhaul of the previous design which was archaic and not intuitive or user friendly. In addition to redesigning the MyPlate Plan calculator I also redesigned the accompanying MyPlate Plan pages.
MyPlate Plan Widget
The widget was in need of a complete redesign. The final product contained a custom accordion expereince with the option to switch languages on the first screen. Bringing the MyPlate Plan into other languages was a cornerstone of the project and a need I made sure to prioritize. I created custom icons as well as a custom scrolling background. The background contained original images from a photoshoot we conducted with CNPP/MyPlate.
MyPlate Plan Wireframes
Overall, I maintained the look and feel of MyPlate’s established site while creating a unique, interactive experience that showcased the unique MyPlate Plan information. This was an immensely complicated project and I was creating brand new components. The major challenge was showcasing the individual calorie plans but showing them in English with the translated version. Working with developers I was able to create a unique tab system for the languages where consumers can easily tab between languages. Throughout the development of the site I worked closely with developers to bring the high-fidelity wireframes to life.
